Project Overview

The Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) in Wolverhampton is one of the most advanced automotive production facilities in the UK and a cornerstone of JLR’s global manufacturing network. The £500 million facility was developed to produce the Ingenium family of petrol and diesel powertrains and now forms a key part of JLR’s transition toward electrified and hybrid vehicle manufacturing.

Spanning more than 100,000 square metres, the facility was designed around precision, sustainability, and digital integration — combining advanced automation with lean production principles to deliver over 450,000 engines per year. It set new standards in operational efficiency and environmental performance, achieving BREEAM Excellent certification and establishing the blueprint for JLR’s future manufacturing expansion.

My Role

As Principal Engineer – Design & Construction, I was responsible for facility integration, design management, and delivery assurance within the Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering (PTME) organisation.
My role bridged between JLR Engineering, Property, and Operations, ensuring that complex facility projects within the EMC were designed and executed to the highest technical and operational standards.

What I Delivered

Design Assurance & Facility Integration

I provided design assurance across all major facility and process integration projects, ensuring architectural, civil, structural, and M&E designs were fully coordinated around manufacturing needs. My focus was to maintain production continuity within a live factory environment while managing technical risks and verifying that designs met JLR’s quality, safety, and operational standards.

OEM Integration & Process Coordination

I managed the technical integration of new manufacturing equipment and production lines, acting as the link between JLR’s engineering teams, global OEMs, and design partners. This included defining spatial layouts, service requirements, and utilities connections to support new machining and assembly lines, as well as ensuring alignment with JLR’s “model plant” data and process standards.

Digital Factory & BIM Delivery

I led the implementation of BIM and digital coordination workflows across the facility projects, ensuring all partners worked within ISO 19650-compliant frameworks. This enabled accurate 3D coordination, reduced rework during construction, and created a verified digital twin for use in operations and maintenance planning.

Construction & Commissioning Readiness

I coordinated design and construction sequencing to minimise disruption to live operations, developing readiness reviews and technical assurance checklists to support phased delivery. This ensured each area was fully validated prior to equipment installation and commissioning, maintaining JLR’s production continuity and safety commitments.

Impact

The Engine Manufacturing Centre established a new benchmark for precision, sustainability, and digitally enabled manufacturing within the UK automotive sector. Through structured design assurance, digital delivery, and OEM integration, I helped JLR deliver a world-class manufacturing facility that continues to evolve as part of its global electrification programme.

The systems and standards developed at the EMC became a foundation for JLR’s wider Digital Factory Strategy, influencing how future sites, such as Project Churchill and overseas manufacturing programmes, are planned, delivered, and managed.
